Description

Join us in a volunteer park cleanup at Black Hill Discovery Center. Help us beautify your community green spaces, keep litter out of our streams, and protect the wildlife at the Black Hill Regional Park.

Whether you are looking for SSL hours or just want to spend the day giving back, you won't believe how good it feels to be a good steward!

Parents must accompany children 14 and under. Please register one or both parents and e-mail katie.festa@montgomeryparks.org to rsvp for younger children.

Cleanup Leader 1 - Adult Group Self-led Cleanups

Location:

Montgomery County, MD

Description

Work with your team to remove trash & litter at a private park cleanup! This application is for adult groups. We ask for a two weeks notice before your cleanup.

Group types include:


  • Businesses, corporations, college student groups & non-profit organizations (no minors)


Steps:
1. Apply using the group registration
* If your organization/group already has an account, contact us and don't create another account.
2. Confirm cleanup details with our staff via email/phone (qualified park or trail, date, time, # volunteers)
3. Pick up your Cleanup Kit & review guidelines
4. Have a fun and safe cleanup!
5. Submit your cleanup results, volunteer sign-in sheets, and email us minor release forms.

Cleanup Leader 2 - Youth Groups & Public Cleanups (Background Check Required)

Description

Apply here if you are part of a youth-based organization and/or interested in offering SSL hours at your cleanup with Montgomery Parks. We ask for a two weeks notice before your cleanup.

Group categories include:


  • Watershed Organization Leaders who host public and private cleanups (ex: Sligo Stewards).

  • Partner Organization Leaders who lead cleanups with youth volunteers (ex: scout troops, school groups, and non-profit organizations).

  • Partner Organization Leaders who lead cleanups with youth and adults with disabilities.


Steps:
1. Apply using the group registration

2. Complete background check
3. Complete training and/or training materials
4. Pick up your Cleanup Kit & SSL forms
5. Have a fun & safe cleanup!
6. Submit your cleanup results, volunteer sign-in sheets, and email us minor release forms.

Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years+
- Complete a background check with Montgomery Parks
- Able to lead volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds
- Able to walk outdoors for up to 3 hours in a variety of trail surfaces and weather conditions (not including severe weather)
- Must be comfortable accessing areas off trail & in streams
- Sign Volunteer Code of Conduct

Individual Volunteer - Join a Cleanup Hosted by Montgomery Parks

Silver Spring, MD

Description

*All students receiving SSL hours must pre-register*

Individual
and family volunteers can join a cleanup hosted by Montgomery Parks staff and volunteers!
- Children under 14 years old must volunteer with a parent/guardian.
- Students must register with their name to receive SSL hours.
- All cleanups are pre-approved for SSL hours. Forms are provided at the cleanup.
- This opportunity is not eligible for court-ordered service.
- To add volunteers to a family group send us an email.
- Wear clothes that can get dirty and shoes that can potentially get wet. Bags and gloves are provided.

Note: When an event fills up, it disappears from the schedule. Cleanups will be added throughout the season, so check back often!

Stream Striders Watershed Leadership Program

Description

The Montgomery Parks Stream Striders volunteer program is accepting applications! Stream Striders lead cleanups and educate participants about watersheds, litter, and sustainability. Applications are open for adult volunteers interested in leadership, education, & community service at their local parks and trails.

How do I become a Stream Strider?
1. Apply here
2. Volunteer at 2 cleanups
3. Complete background screening
4. Complete Stream Striders E-course
5. Co-lead a cleanup!

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Must be 18 years+
- Complete a background check with Montgomery Parks
- Follow park protocols and safety measures
- Ability to work with a variety of groups in a leadership position
- Ability to present information and educate others
- Able to walk outdoors for up to 3 hours in a variety of trail surfaces and weather conditions (not including severe weather)
- Must be comfortable accessing areas off trail & in streams

COMMITMENT:
- Minimum of two cleanups per year
- Scheduling is flexible!
