Have you ever rang a dinner bell for a flying squirrel?Flying squirrels are perhaps the coolest woodland creature you've never seen. Every evening around dusk, these secretive creatures come out in search of food, gliding up to 100 feet in between trees.Locust Grove Nature Center is looking for volunteers passionate about wildlife for our new Flying Squirrel Feeder Program. Load our feeding platforms with nutritious sunflower seeds, use our pulley system to hoist the platforms high into the trees, and ring the dinner bell. Then watch as flying squirrels glide from platform to platform for a free meal.An orientation to the program and training provided. After completing training, you must demonstrate an ability to work independently without a staff member.Schedule Flying squirrels are creatures of habit, and for the success of the program, volunteers must be willing to commit to a routine. We're looking for volunteers who can come once a week at dusk for approximately a half hour. Available to individuals or groups, However, at least one volunteer must be over the age of 18, since the shift is scheduled at dusk and at times when the Nature Center may be closed.

Locust Grove Nature Center is looking for a handy person to perform general outdoor maintenance duties around the buildings, trails, and the formal gardens on site. Help us keep the Nature Center Grounds beautiful for visiting people and wildlife alike!Examples of tasks include small repairs, installing new exhibits, painting outdoor play elements, clearing walkways and trails, mulching gardens, and other odd jobs!The right person for this job enjoys working independently outdoors, and has a keen eye for details. Some carpentry and/or landscaping experience preferred. Little training is provided.

Locust Grove Nature Center is a really busy place on the weekends - and we need your help!The Nature Center Host takes pride in being the first face visitors see when they come to Locust Grove. S/he helps visitors have a good experience in the park as they learn about the natural world around them. Duties and Responsibilities1. Staff the front desk.2. Greet visitors when they arrive.3. Help visitors locate maps, brochures, and other resources.4. Recommend trails, activities, and programs.5. Answer the phone.6. Assist the Park Naturalists in programs as needed.7. Keep the exhibit room in order.8. Provide care for our resident snakes and turtles, and the wild birds outside.9. Participate in environmental education or training opportunities.10. Weekend Volunteer Trail Workday projects are a great way to support one of Montgomery Parks most popular facilities. By participating in a volunteer group trail maintenance or construction project you will be helping improve the natural surface trail network for all to enjoy. The minimum age to volunteer is 15 years old, however 13 & 14 years old may volunteer if an adult participates with them. All Volunteer Trail Workdays are SSL approved.Volunteer Trail Workdays will return in March 2020.
