Thanks for thinking of Montgomery Parks as a place for your Eagle Scout project! Sometimes we have ideas for potential Eagle projects, but the number of Eagle candidates far outnumbers them. We often ask the scout to find a suitable project. Choose a park location that is convenient to you and explore the area to see what amenities you can help create or restore. Flying Squirrel Feeder - Weekly - Locust Grove Nature Center

Have you ever rang a dinner bell for a flying squirrel?

Flying squirrels are perhaps the coolest woodland creature you've never seen. Every evening around dusk, these secretive creatures come out in search of food, gliding up to 100 feet in between trees.

Locust Grove Nature Center is looking for volunteers passionate about wildlife for our new Flying Squirrel Feeder Program. Load our feeding platforms with nutritious sunflower seeds, use our pulley system to hoist the platforms high into the trees, and ring the dinner bell. Then watch as flying squirrels glide from platform to platform for a free meal.

An orientation to the program and training provided. After completing training, you must demonstrate an ability to work independently without a staff member.

Schedule
Flying squirrels are creatures of habit, and for the success of the program, volunteers must be willing to commit to a routine. We're looking for volunteers who can come once a week at dusk for approximately a half hour.

Available to individuals or groups, However, at least one volunteer must be over the age of 18, since the shift is scheduled at dusk and at times when the Nature Center may be closed.

Groups looking for Projects in Parks!

Are you a group leader looking to do some Team Building, have your group give back to the environment, or just them get out in the parks? We can help you with that!

We are always looking from groups like yours to help us with several types of projects in the parks, including Weed Warrioring (removing bad plants so good plants can thrive); Trail Projects (building or restoring natural surface paths); Park Cleanups; Nature Center Projects (can including gardening/mulching/restoring play areas/trails/etc.); Gardening; helping New Trees Survive; Spreading Wood Fiber at Plagrounds and many more.

We will need to know some basic information to set you up with the right project, including:
- Size and ages of group
- When and Where would be convenient for your group
- Any restrictions (need bathrooms, running water on site)

Adults and children can learn to skate or improve their skills through the group lessons we offer. Ice Skating Instructional Assistants provide the extra hands necessary to provide high quality instruction and improve student success and enthusiasm for this wonderful sport. Under the supervision of the Cabin John Ice Skating Director, Instructional Assistants are assigned to help Group Lesson Instructors in the "Learn to Skate" program, which include lessons, clinics, and camps. Weekend Volunteer Trail Workday projects are a great way to support one of Montgomery Parks most popular facilities. By participating in volunteer group trail maintenance or construction project you will be helping improve the natural surface trail network for all to enjoy.
