12/15/2018 - Audubon Christmas Bird Count - Brookside Nature Center, Wheaton - Saturday, 8:30am - 11:30am

Location:

Brookside Nature Center
1400 Glenallan Ave.
Wheaton, MD 20902

Description

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is an annual tradition that started back in the year 1900. 117 years later, the information collected by birders is providing invaluable data to better understand the ebb and flow of bird populations in North America.

Please join our group of bird watchers as we do our part for this annual event. Experienced and inexperienced birders are welcome!

The group will walk the trails around Brookside Nature Center to count and identify winter birds, starting early Saturday morning, at 8:30 am. Depending on the weather and number of volunteers, we will scout until 11:30. It is not madatory that volunteers stay the entire time, but the more sharp-eyed scouts, the better!

The results of the count will be tallied with those collected from all over the county and sent to the Cornell Ornithology Lab.

Volunteers will be contacted with more details after they sign up.

Woods Warriors - New Tree Survival Projects (Only Groups Should Apply)

Location:

Various Parks Throughout Montgomery Parks
Montgomery County, MD

Description

Montgomery Parks LOVES trees (just look at our logo!), and we plant 100's of new young trees every year. But unfortunately, until they become substantially bigger, these new trees need your help!

When they are first planted, our trees have wire fencing put around them to protect them from deer and other animals harming their bark. We also try to put some mulch or at least clear up the weeds from around their bases, to let them get all of the nutrients and water they need to survive.

Groups like yours will help us help the new trees that have been "out there" for awhile, that need a check-in to make sure the cages are still strong and working, and the weeds are kept at bay. These projects typically run 2 to 3 hours.

Your Group's Leader will work with our Park Staff to pick from one of many of our reforestation sites that's convenient to your location.

Please contact Norma Kawecki at Norma.Kawecki@MontgomeryParks.org to discuss your potential project with her before filling out an application.

Dates are flexible, and we will work with your schedule (but weekdays are preferred). Supplies will be provided, but if you have a favorite pair of gloves, bring them! We also suggest that you bring your own water and snacks, dress to be out in a tall grass field with long sleeves and long pants, wear closed shoes and bug spray.
