Work with your team to remove trash & litter at a private park cleanup! This application is for adult groups. We ask for a two weeks notice before your cleanup.

Group types include:


  • Businesses, corporations, college student groups & non-profit organizations (no minors)


Steps:
1. Apply using the group registration
* If your organization/group already has an account, contact us and don't create another account.
2. Confirm cleanup details with our staff via email/phone (qualified park or trail, date, time, # volunteers)
3. Pick up your Cleanup Kit & review guidelines
4. Have a fun and safe cleanup!
5. Submit your cleanup results, volunteer sign-in sheets, and email us minor release forms.

Daytime Program Assistant

Description

Program Access, which provides inclusion services for individuals with disabilities throughout Montgomery Parks, is looking for volunteers to assist us with Meaningful Day programs. These programs serve adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities during weekdays. Activities currently include bocce, hiking, and social activities. Please see the shifts below to find the volunteer position that works best for you! These positions will change seasonally.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Provide a unique experience for individuals with disabilities in the outdoors

  • Supporting participant success in the activity by assisting with the rules and techniques of the activity.

  • Facilitate meaningful conversation and social interactions amongst participants.

  • Ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of participants by providing accommodations as needed

  • Activity set-up and clean-up

  • Scorekeeping, when applicable.



IMPORTANT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Comfortable working with people with disabilities

  • Knowledge of bocce, boccia, or hiking is a plus

  • Working knowledge of the flora and fauna of the state of Maryland is a plus



Requirements


  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old

  • Must be able to participate in light physical activity, including walking and lawn games

  • Interest in working with participants with disabilities

  • Must agree to and pass a background screening.



ORIENTATION AND TRAINING:


  • Orientation and Training will be provided by your supervisor during your first shift. Orientation will include information on guidelines about how to work with people with disabilities, set-up, clean-up, and any activity rules and regulations.

FrogWatch Community Scientist

Description

Parkland managed by Montgomery Parks makes up more than 10% of Montgomery County's land and serves as the County's "backyard". It is also home to upwards of 14 frog and toad species, each of which can be recognized by unique breeding calls made at wetlands and other aquatic habitats!

Volunteer FrogWatch Community Scientists will receive training and special permission to monitor for calling frogs at natural, created, and enhanced aquatic habitats on parkland at night in order to extend the reach of the biological monitoring, stormwater management, and environmental review programs managed by staff.

This is not eligible for SSL hours. Family groups are welcome, but only those 18 and older, and who have registered and completed training will be considered an official Montgomery Parks' FrogWatch Volunteer.

PARTICIPATION DETAILS:

- Complete online and supplemental training.

- Visit one or more assigned aquatic habitat sites, at least monthly, 30 min. after sunset (once permission issued).

- Adhere to established monitoring protocol and expectations.

- Enter data into an online database, FrogWatch-FieldScope.

- Maintain communication with the Montgomery FrogWatch Coordinators (frogwatch@montgomeryparks.org).

- Assist with locating and registering wetland habitat for new listening locations (optional).

- Document volunteer efforts in the volunteer database (https://montgomeryparks.org/support/volunteer/).

TIME COMMITMENT:
Perform monitoring AT LEAST once a month (but hopefully more) in designated park areas from March through August. Monitoring visits are conducted in the evening (at least 30 minutes after sunset) and can take as little as 15 minutes! Volunteers will be fully trained on protocols before monitoring and will have opportunities to join Park Naturalists and Maryland Master Naturalist volunteers on monitoring visits each month.

Participants may also volunteer to canvas parkland during the day (year-round) to locate and assist with registering trail-accessible wetlands and additional frog listening locations.

TRAINING:

A virtual information and training session for the 2026 season will be held on Thursday, February 26th from 7:00 - 9:00 PM and will be recorded. Trained Montgomery Parks volunteers may also attend a field-based review session at Maydale Nature Classroom in Colesville, Maryland on Thursday, March 12th from 7:00-9:00 PM (Inclement weather date Thursday, March 19th. You will receive a link to training registration after submitting your FrogWatch Community Scientist application.

Although sometimes Park Staff have projects in mind, the number of applicants far outnumbers them. It is often up to the scout to find a suitable project. We suggest you choose a park location that is convenient to you and explore the area to see what amenities you can help create or restore.

Park staff will work with you to review your project proposal prior to approval. The scout will then be responsible for good communication with Park Staff, and completing the project in a timely manner.

We are always looking from groups like yours to help us with several types of projects in the parks, including Weed Warrioring (removing bad plants so good plants can thrive); Park Cleanups; Nature Center Projects (can including gardening/mulching/restoring play areas/trails/etc.); Gardening; helping New Trees Survive; Spreading Wood Fiber at Plagrounds and many more.

- Students must register with their name to receive SSL hours.

- Wear clothes that can get dirty and shoes that can potentially get wet. Bags and gloves are provided.

The school is furnished as it was in the 1920s in a beautiful rural setting. Help visitors learn what school was like in the past!

The schoolhouse is open the first Sunday of each month, April through October.

Weed Warrior Workday Events

A variety of non-native, invasive plant species are present in Montgomery Parks. By their nature, these plants can take over an area quickly and threaten our native plant communities and the wildlife that depends on them.

Join one of our Weed Warrior workday events to learn how you can help control non-native, invasive plants and preserve the health of our parks! Instruction and tools will be provided.

Events are held in parks throughout the county and are led by volunteer Weed Warrior Supervisors and/or park staff. See event description for exact locations, times and meeting points.

Each volunteer must register separately with their own account.

Most events are for ages 16+. For events that allow younger children, all volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by a registered, responsible adult.
