Adaptive Mountain Biking Support Rider (Clinic)

Montgomery Parks is excited to host an Adaptive Mountain Biking Clinic designed exclusively for individuals with disabilities to experience the thrill of mountain biking. Join us as a Volunteer Support Rider to help make our adaptive riders' experience a success.

Volunteer Tasks:


  • Support Rider: Bike alongside participants, providing encouragement and trail assistance.

  • Bike Fittings and Transfers: Help participants get set up on their adaptive mountain bike.

  • Trail Support & Safety: Assist with basic instruction and ensure a smooth riding experience.


No prior adaptive experience is necessary—just a love for mountain biking and a willingness to help! Our team will provide training so you feel confident in your role.

Schedule:


  • New Volunteer Training: 9-10am

  • Experienced Volunteer Arrival Time: 10am

  • Optional Pre-ride/warm-up: 10- 10:30am

  • Morning Bike Fittings and Ride: 10:30am- 12pm

  • Lunch (provided): 12- 1pm

  • Afternoon Bike Fittings and Ride: 1- 2:30pm



Volunteer Requirements:


  • Volunteers must be age 16+. *14 and 15 yr old volunteers may participate if accompanied by a registered adult.

  • Volunteers must bring their own mountain bike, helmet, and safety equipment.

  • Volunteers must be comfortable riding on a variety of terrains for at least 5-miles.

  • Volunteer must have the ability to keep up with riders using power-assist bikes while maintaining a safe, steady group pace ("party pace").

  • New Volunteers: Please complete Catalyst Sports' online New Volunteer Training



What to Bring:


  • Water bottle (Refill station provided)

  • Safety/Sunglasses

  • Closed Toe Shoes

Cleanup Leader 1 - Adult Group Self-led Cleanups

Description

Work with your team to remove trash & litter at a private park cleanup! This application is for adult groups. We ask for a two weeks notice before your cleanup.

Group types include:


  • Businesses, corporations, college student groups & non-profit organizations (no minors)


Steps:
1. Apply using the group registration
* If your organization/group already has an account, contact us and don't create another account.
2. Confirm cleanup details with our staff via email/phone (qualified park or trail, date, time, # volunteers)
3. Pick up your Cleanup Kit & review guidelines
4. Have a fun and safe cleanup!
5. Submit your cleanup results, volunteer sign-in sheets, and email us minor release forms.

Apply here if you are part of a youth-based organization and/or interested in offering SSL hours at your cleanup with Montgomery Parks. We ask for a two weeks notice before your cleanup.

Group categories include:


  • Watershed Organization Leaders who host public and private cleanups (ex: Sligo Stewards).

  • Partner Organization Leaders who lead cleanups with youth volunteers (ex: scout troops, school groups, and non-profit organizations).

  • Partner Organization Leaders who lead cleanups with youth and adults with disabilities.


Steps:

3. Complete training and/or training materials
4. Pick up your Cleanup Kit & SSL forms
5. Have a fun & safe cleanup!

- Complete a background check with Montgomery Parks
- Able to lead volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds
- Able to walk outdoors for up to 3 hours in a variety of trail surfaces and weather conditions (not including severe weather)
- Must be comfortable accessing areas off trail & in streams
- Sign Volunteer Code of Conduct

Daytime Program Assistant

Program Access, which provides inclusion services for individuals with disabilities throughout Montgomery Parks, is looking for volunteers to assist us with Meaningful Day programs. These programs serve adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities during weekdays. Activities currently include bocce, hiking, and social activities. Please see the shifts below to find the volunteer position that works best for you! These positions will change seasonally.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Provide a unique experience for individuals with disabilities in the outdoors

  • Supporting participant success in the activity by assisting with the rules and techniques of the activity.

  • Facilitate meaningful conversation and social interactions amongst participants.

  • Ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of participants by providing accommodations as needed

  • Activity set-up and clean-up

  • Scorekeeping, when applicable.



IMPORTANT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Comfortable working with people with disabilities

  • Knowledge of bocce, boccia, or hiking is a plus

  • Working knowledge of the flora and fauna of the state of Maryland is a plus



Requirements


  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old

  • Must be able to participate in light physical activity, including walking and lawn games

  • Interest in working with participants with disabilities

  • Must agree to and pass a background screening.



ORIENTATION AND TRAINING:


  • Orientation and Training will be provided by your supervisor during your first shift. Orientation will include information on guidelines about how to work with people with disabilities, set-up, clean-up, and any activity rules and regulations.

Although sometimes Park Staff have projects in mind, the number of applicants far outnumbers them. It is often up to the scout to find a suitable project. We suggest you choose a park location that is convenient to you and explore the area to see what amenities you can help create or restore.

Park staff will work with you to review your project proposal prior to approval. The scout will then be responsible for good communication with Park Staff, and completing the project in a timely manner.

We are always looking from groups like yours to help us with several types of projects in the parks, including Weed Warrioring (removing bad plants so good plants can thrive); Park Cleanups; Nature Center Projects (can including gardening/mulching/restoring play areas/trails/etc.); Gardening; helping New Trees Survive; Spreading Wood Fiber at Plagrounds and many more.

Join a Park Cleanup - Individual Volunteers

and family volunteers can join a cleanup hosted by Montgomery Parks and partner organizations!
- Children under 14 years old must volunteer with a parent/guardian.
- Students must register with their name to receive SSL hours.
- All cleanups are pre-approved for SSL hours. Forms are provided at the cleanup.
- This opportunity is not eligible for court-ordered service.

- Wear clothes that can get dirty and shoes that can potentially get wet. Bags and gloves are provided.

Spring Eye Spy Train | Wheaton Regional Park | April weekends and daily during MCPS Spring Break

Friendly helpers are needed at our Spring Eye Spy Train ride in Wheaton Regional Park this April!

The train will be running Saturdays and Sundays in April, and daily during the MCPS Spring Break (March 28 - April 6, 2026). There will be two shifts each day: 9:15am-1:15pm or 12:45pm -4:45pm.

**Please only sign up for one shift per day!**

Minimum age is 14 and older (no exceptions!).

Schedule: If you forgot the dates/times you signed up, please follow this link to Log In and click on View Your Schedule.

Where to check-in: Please enter the park from the Shorefield Road entrance, off of Georgia Avenue. You can park or be dropped off near the top of the parking lot and check in at the train station ticket window.

Hours: You should show up 15 minutes before your shift for orientation and assignment.

What to Wear: Please wear something clean and family friendly. Bring a coat if you think it will be chilly!

Weed Warrior Workday Events

A variety of non-native, invasive plant species are present in Montgomery Parks. By their nature, these plants can take over an area quickly and threaten our native plant communities and the wildlife that depends on them.

Join one of our Weed Warrior workday events to learn how you can help control non-native, invasive plants and preserve the health of our parks! Instruction and tools will be provided.

Events are held in parks throughout the county and are led by volunteer Weed Warrior Supervisors and/or park staff. See event description for exact locations, times and meeting points.

Each volunteer must register separately with their own account.

Most events are for ages 16+. For events that allow younger children, all volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by a registered, responsible adult.

How to register
